Self-preservation is also a truth of human nature.
I think there is a basic and very strong need to have experiences, especially those that contribute to well being. If this need is not fulfilled (e.g. someone is in a state of paralysis, etc), then imagination and dream states resolve this necessity. It ties in with what I believe is a physical construct of the mind to grow and learn, and to be happy. If experiences are not good, then at times imagination and denial of reality preserves well being.
