Well, traditionally Republicans are for personal responsibility, small & efficient government, a strong military and low taxes. Democrats have traditionally been for larger government, entitlement / social programs, heavy government regulation on business, and higher taxation rates. These are some of the more glaring & traditional differences. Unfortunately both parties have grown closer in many respects over the last few decades. Now it seems like both parties want to take us down the road of higher taxes, greater spending and more government programs with the Republicans simply taking us there a little slower than what the Democrats would like.

Hi, when I was in 8th grade kids use to ask this all the time. I always gave the answer. So here goes:
A Democrat usually favors the average American. They do things to help improve their every day lives. They know not every person is rolling in money but they always have us in mind.
A republican tends to side the upper crust. They care about money and business, or so it seems. It seems that is all their world revolves around and they have problems balancing it out. The bills they pass are to benefit people like them, not everyone.
But what really does it matter? See our first president, George Washington said he did not want our political system to be coruppeted by seperation. Two sides fighting against each other.
EDIT: For those of you who think everyone on welfare is stupid and lazy. THINK AGAIN. It's for mothers who are disabled and widows. For people who need help for a little bit. Not everyone abuses the system.

Democrats tend to favor everyday people while Republicans favor the wealthy and businesses.
Democrats have generally a better domestic policy while Republicans tend to have a better foreign policy.
Democrats are said to tax and spend (buy now pay now) where Republicans tend to borrow and spend (buy now pay later)
Both have strong support of the military but the Republicans are a little quicker on the trigger than the Democrats who prefer to exhaust all diplomacy and sanctions before using the military.
Democrats tend to favor programs that help the poor, elderly and immigrants where the Republicans tend to favor big churches, big business and native born Americans over all else.
These, of course don't apply to all Dems or Reps all the time they are just general historic trends and tendancies.

Republicans support free economy with minimum government involvement, low proportional taxes, reduction of government sponsored social programs (moving those programs to church), privatizing whatever can be privatize (schools, social security, medicare) and keeping private whatever is private now (health insurance), regulating human behavior, scientific development, education in accordance with religious moral and dogmas.
Democrats support regulated economy, progressive taxes (covering social programs like public education, social security, health insurance), freedom of choice, unrestricted progress in science, education based on science, the wall between state and religion.
