If I hadn't come home from riding my bike when I did, my dad may never have noticed that the lint trap was melting out of the dryer and flaming quietly on the floor. He was in the back room (where our main door was, because our house got put in backwards). I walked in, pointed at it and said, "fire," calmly, even giggling a little -- I was about eight, and thought he knew it was there.
The next thing I knew my sister and I were being chased out of the house. My mom was on the phone with the emergency people. My dad was flinging flaming towels out the door (followed by the flaming dryer) with his bare hands. It took a while for the aid vehicles to show up, because we lived in the boonies.
It was a scary day. The only real damage done was to that back room and, obviously, our dryer and towels. I will never forget that day, because I may have saved my family members' lives.

I say this to myself all the time. Bad things happen to the best of people, but you have to relize that if you would have known then what you know now, then it wouldn't have happened. That's life it comes at you hard and unpredictable, you just have to try and find the positive from negative situations.

Years ago, my girl friend was still in college and was home at her parent's house for the summer (we were still both fairly young).
I was visiting her for the week, staying at her parents house, a good six hours drive from my house. One afternoon, we ran into some mutual friends of ours, some of whom I had not seen in a few years. We made arrangements to get together later that evening.
We went back to my gf's house, had some dinner, and later my gf said that she wanted to go to bed, she was feeling tired, but it was fine if I went out, she didn't mind. We made love, she went to sleep, then later, I went out. We were sleeping in separate bedrooms becuase, it WAS her parent's house, and that was just the way it was.
Turns out that one of the people there later that evening was a sort of skanky girl who my gf went to high school with (and was friends with). The skank hit on me all night, but I pretty much said, no, I intended to marry my gf, that was that, I truly loved her.
I got home later, crawled into my bed, only to find my gf there, awake, and crying. I asked her what was wrong, and almost not skipping a beat, she basically dumped me right there and then...breaking my heart. She refused to tell me why and really just accused me of being sad and pathetic for trying to get her to talk to me.
That was twenty years ago and I'm still not really completely over it. Years after this, I found out that she assumed that I had slept with her skanky friend after the two of them had agreed to "test" my loyalty to here. So her "friend" had lied to her and she had reacted on that lie.
I really loved her and would have done anything to get her back, but she just refused to listen from that point on.
If I'd been home that night, instead of going out drinking with my buddies, I'd probably still be with the most wonderful woman I have ever known.
But instead, I've become a bitter mysogynist with a piss poor atitude about relationships in general.
