the first and usual culprit is the flapper at the bottom of the toilet tank needs to be replaced since it no longer seals the tank. They are inexpensive, $4-7, and can be easily installed by most people with thumbs.

Or your chain to the flapper is too long and causing it to not seal properly and then run on.

After that you can go after the seal between the tank and the seat but that is a bit unusual for that to go.

I have no links, but have worked on dozens of toilets in my time.

The first thing to check for might be leaks from the tank. A leak should be obvious and if the water level is never where it should be the toilet would continue to "run"

The next place to check, and the least expensive repair to make is the "Flapper" and the seat of the drain under the flapper. If it isn't seating properly then the water will continue to flow out and down the drain. An easy test is to remove the tank lid, and put modest pressure on the flapper for a minute or two. If the RUNNING stops, then that may be your only problem.

Certainly the flush mechanism might be degraded, and as much a bargain as the "GUTS" are, it's not so difficult to replace all of that on some regular basis.
