the comparison you make between Michael Vick and vice president Cheney is a weak one at best. the vice president was out with a friend legally hunting their prey. what happened was an unfortunate accident that happens all too often during hunting season. Michael Vick on the other hand was committing the crime of fighting dogs, gambling of said fights, and then killing the dogs that did not perform like they should have. these are all felonies, and all carry jail time. Mr Vick has pled guilty to these crimes, and thus avoided a long and costly trial. since he NFL has seen fit to suspend him indefinitely, he is in breach of contract with the falcons, and thus the falcons will go after him to regain at least par to the contract signing bonus given to him by the falcons. as to the dogs being put down anyway;
first not necessarily. a few of those dogs will likely be rehabilitated. the others however will at least be put down humanly, and not cruelly drowned, strangled, or electrocuted, like Mr Vick had done.
as far as animal rights groups not trying to stop hunting, they do. every year they try to get legislation passed to stop hunting. they actually succeeded in colorado for a few years. they got bear hunting eliminated. that lasted about 2 years when colorado started having major bear problems in the cities. since then it has been proven time and time again that responsible hunting is actually a benefit to the environment as it keeps game populations in check preventing many problems like death by starvation, over grazing of grass lands, etc.
you might want to actually check some facts.

Dog fighting is illegal in this country. So yes, it's a federal crime. He will be less wealthy because of it. Michael Vick killed dogs on purpose. Cheney shot a man by accident. Hunting pheasants during the proper season is legal. Killing a dog by choking it, drowning it, or electrocuting it is illegal nor is it considered hunting.
There is no trial because his lawyers advised him to plead guilty due to the overwhelming evidence against him and receive a lesser sentence rather than being proven guilty in the courts and having to serve longer.

You are very wrong about the young, wealthy, and playing football part. Mike Vick will be going to jail for 2 years, and suffer MASSIVE fines by the NFL for breech of contract with the Falcons. Vick will not play in the NFL again. Too many fans are middle class white americans, like me, who all hate dogfighting. No team will alienate their fan base by signing Vick. Vick will play in Europe or Canada. Dog Fighing is a very serious crime.

There is a difference beween an accidential shooting-- and intentional animal cruelty.
The party involved with the VP -- even said that it was an accident-- and therefore no criminal activity worth pursuing came into play.
However, Vick has became a figurehead in the media-- and as a role model-- he engages in cruel and illegal activity.
Those fights cost him $100,000,000 +

he might not be that wealthy when he has to pay all the fines. plus he'll have to live for the rest of his life on what he's already made b/c no one will hire him now.
animal abuse is akin to child abuse. you are hurting something so innocent. animals were given to us to take care of. it's a crime against GOD.
the vice president can tbe charged unless the man he shot presses charges.

Okay, since he's still going to be young, wealthy, and playing football, what's the problem? PS: Dick Cheney is STILL vice-president.

I have rescued a Pit b4 but, If animal control had found those dogs, in most cities they would have been killed.
What you have just witnessed was the Distraction of the Week. Why should Americans focus on important things when there's Brittany, Lindsay, and on and on.

Because it crossed state lines, it was a Federal instead of a State crime.
Basic black-letter law, I believe.
If you mean no trial for Vick, it's because he pled guilty. No trial needed.
