Everything about the book takes part in making it good, but I agree that endings are important to me. I mean, after reading the story, what's the point if the end doesn't tie everything together and satisfy you?
=)

It depends. I have read books that have developed characters wonderfully or the plot was involving enough that I was able to see past a disappointing finale (the Harry Potter series is an example of this) but there have been times when I've invested in a book only to be totally let down and felt as if I wasted my time with the book (The Secret of Crickley Hall by James Herbert was an example of this where the ending was so boring and perverted I wanted to blot it from my mind!).

That irritates me so much! I also hate when the book ends without a real, clear conclusion being drawn...I find myself thinking, "I need to finish reading that book so I can see what happened to the characters," and then I remember, "Oh, wait! I did finish it already and the book just didn't make sense of anything at the end." Grrr... frustrating.

i think its the buildup TO the ending that makes a book. but the ending can change it.
if the book is great up until the ending the books either not good or so-so. if the book sucks but the endings great the book could be awesome...
i think it depends on the book =D

I agree with you.Reading a book with a bad ending is a waste of time. It's like you are expecting it to be good, but it is not.Of course if the beginning and middle aren't so bad, it is not a waste of time reading those parts.

I agree.I have read some books and hated the way it ended. The ending made no sense unless another book was coming out to tie up the loose ends, that the ending left

I agree, but usually if a book is rubbish you realize it before getting to the end...

Yeah, I hate getting to the end of the book and realizing I've just wasted my time.

I totally agree. If the ending is bad then it ruins the whole book.

one of my favourite authors, Iain M. Banks, has generally quite **** endings.. but the rest of the books are great!!
I've got used to his endings and now don't mind so much - now I enjoy reading the rest enought to counter the ending :)
