Hi,
Questions are dumb only if you can't get the answer and don't ask for help.
Your statement of the problem is a little contradictory because you say you want to minus (I read that as being subtract.) -1/3 from 9. But the you write 9 subtracted from 1/3. So, to cover all bases, let's do both.
Let's do 9 subtracted form -1/3.
-1/3 -9
Frist, let's get a common deniminator of 3.
-1/3 - 27/3 We did that by writing 9/1 and multiplying numerator and denominator by 3.
Now, when we subtract, we change the sign of the number being subtracted and add. So, we have this:
-1/3 + (-27/3)
-28/3 (Add the numerators.)

Now, let's do what you wrote:
1/3-9
1/3 - 27/3
26/3 Subtract the smaller numerator form the larger and give the result the sign of the larger absolute value.

Hope this helps.

No worries. It's better to ask, than not to.
It's 9 - 1/3 = 27/3 - 1/3 = 26/3 or 8 2/3

-1/3 - 9
= -1/3 - (27/3)
= - 28/3
= - 9 & 1/3
