I pretty much dislike the folks who exlusively sing music written by others. The exception to that is the old singers, like Tony Bennett or Frank Sinatra, when those two jobs in music were very distinct, or opera singers, who are, by necessity, singing someone else's music.
If someone wants to really share part of themselves in their lyrics and music, I may not like the way it sounds, but I am willing to give them credit for trying, even if I think they suck.
Sort of in general, I don't like: C&W; boy bands; most folk music (although I think some of it is great); pop music (although some Latin pop music is okie dokie by me); people who try to make "cross over" records and capitalize on their fame to sell crappy noise; "lite" or "smooth" or "easy" anything, especially when included with the words "jazz" or "listening"; rap; hip-hop; and any performers who are busy trying desperately to keep their names in the tabloids to boost their sales. If an artist is good, and has confidence in what they are doing, they know that someone is going to buy their music, and that the music will speak for them loud and clear.
With that said, here's a few specific observations.
Britney Spears offends me on many levels. I cannot believe her 15 minutes of fame has stretched on this long, and I cannot wait for it to be over.
The Rolling Stones have written some really great songs, but overall, I find them overrated. Mick Jagger stopped being sexy years ago, if he ever really was in the first place.
Much of the current "emo" stuff just leaves me confused. Buying one of those discs is like a treasure hunt--two really good songs buried in a bunch of mediocrity, and you have to figure out which ones the good one are. Are they the heirs of punk? The heirs of goth? Or just the heirs of a record industry that keeps signing contracts with bands that really don't have their own sound? Someone let me know when they figure it out.
The stuff that's called "punk" now is not punk. Punk was a movement that developed in a specific place and time, and was largely a reaction to the political and social climate in England, and later the US, at the time. Lots of distorition, a manic drummer, a heroin habit, and dirty lyrics don't make you a punk band--they make you yesterday's news. And thank goodness for that.

I don't like Rolling Stones. I just don't see why they are one of the greatest, they aren't that good. Their only good songs are "Paint It Black" and "You Can't Always Get What You Want".
