Ok stupid me was cutting something with a fold up knife and the dam thing folded up over my thump. The cut is pretty deep but not to the bone ( I dont think ). I was pretty fast at getting a wetwipe and putting pressure on the wound and the bleeding seemd to half seal the cut.

It has been throbing all day and when i took the plaster off it looked pretty deep and open. So i got some of that bandage tape stuff and made myself some butterfly stitches and sealed the wound up pretty well. I'm hoping it will clot well enough to heal, Not really bothered about a scar as its only a thumb.

Any advice weather i should go to the Hospital or just keep changing the dressing everyday. Note this is throbing like mad but the bleeding as keept off.

Throbbing indicates healing, not infection.

An infection is indicated by pus coming from the wound, the tell-tale "red line" fron the point of injury up the extremity, or extreme redness, swelling, tenderness to the area. If it is truly infected then a trip to the doctor (just a regular doctor or PA or maybe an urgent care -- NOT an ER!) will get you a prescription for an antibiotic.

As long as it has been clean and covered infection shouldn't be an issue, or course a cut with a very dirty or otherwise compromised object could immediately expose you to infection.

It was stupid to not go in right away as a deep cut to a small body part such as a finger could have jeopardized a tendon, nerve, or important blood vessel. They won't do anything about the cut itself since the limit for stitches and the like is 4-6 hours.

Keep it clean and watch for signs of infection; that's the only thing to worry about now.

Elevating and ibuprofen can eliminate some pain and pressure.

Hi Juliet, It's always hard to tell someone whether they need stitches or not over the internet. The best thing always, is to see a Doctor if you think it needs stitches. You should really be able to know by looking at it. If you clean it, dry it, and place antibiotic on it and wrap it tightly together with a band-aid, check it tomorrow and see how it's doing. Also, I'm assuming that someone gave rk a thumbs down because he mentioned the Super Glue. However, most people don't know that it was actually first invented to be used as a skin band-aid. This was why it was invented to begin with. So, he's not "Crazy", nor was the lady that put it on him. So, you need to go with what you think is best. Stitches, bandaging (Checking later) or....Yes, Super Glue! Good luck and take care!

I am not a doctor, so use your own best judgement, but it is going to throb for a few days. Keep putting antiseptic on it, and watch for any redness, heat sensation or swelling. if it is not improved in three days or so, go get it looked at. (However, it will be sore when they examine it at this point) Also - If you have not had a tetanus shot lately, you may want to go in sooner. Keep it clean clean clean and covered... Neopsporin antibiotic ointment works really well.... hope it gets better soon!

Go to the hospital. The throbbing indicates either infection or nerve damage.
