My French teacher was a great teacher and presented the material well, but the students hated her.

Never. Usually these "good" teachers are unpopular because they lack respect for their students.
You cannot be a good teacher if you don't respect your students. That is the very basis of education and working with other people. Regardless of age.

My typography teacher in High School was one of the most intelligent and talented people I've met...
However, both our immaturity and his (somewhat unimaginative) method of teaching made it so that it wasn't until later I realized his genius.
