8x - 4 - 2x = -10
you have to get rid of the -4 on the left so you add it to the right. If it were a positive 4 you would subtract it.
8x - 4 (+4) - 2x = -10 (+4)
the 4's will cancel each other out and you will be left with
8x - 2x = -6
now, simply finish out the problem. 8x - 2x is 6x so...
6x = -6
You're trying to find out what x is, so now you must divide both sides by 6. (6, because it is the number in front of the x, if it were 4x, you would divide by 4, etc.)
6x / 6 = -6 / 6
The 6's would cancel out on the left side leaving you with x and -6 divided by 6 is -1.
x = -1

I just did it in my head and I'm not absolutely sure but I think x = -1. I'm a little rusty on this. You have to combine like terms (8x - 2x = 6x). And then add 4 to both sides leaving you with 6x = -6. So you divide both sides by 6 which gives you x = -1.
I haven't done this type of Algebra in a long time though, so I hope this helps!

First combine the x terms:
8x - 2x - 4 = -10
6x - 4 = -10 add 4 to both sides
6x = -6 divide both sides by 6
x = -1

that equation is actually 6x-4=-10.
You combine the like terms which are 8x and -2x. That equals 6x.
Then you
6x-4=-10
+4 +4
6x=-6
then divide 6 by the 6x which cancels the 6 out and divide the same 6 by -6 which means that
x=-1

well 8x-2x=6x
So you have : 6x-4=-10 /+4 (Then you add 4 to eliminate it from the left ).
The ecuation becomes 6x=-6/:6 (You need to find the value of x, so you divide both members of the ecuation with 6 (with the number in front of x)) so you obtain x= -1.
So the value of x is -1.
Hope this helps.
and if you verify :8*(- 1) - 4 - 2*(-1)=-10.So -10= - 10, so the equation is correct.

you dare to ask? :D
8x-2x= -6 ( you bring the 4 to the other side so it becomes -10 + 4
(8x-2x is 6x)
so 6x=-6
(Divide by 6)
x=-1

8x - 4 - 2x = - 10
Collect like terms
6x - 4 = - 10
Transpose 4
6x - 4 + 4 = - 10 + 4
Collect like terms
6x = - 6
Divide both sides of the equation by 6
6x / 6 = - 6 / 6
x = - 6/6
x = - 1

combine like terms on the left side:
8x-4-2x=-10
see there is two X terms, so combine them to make:
8x+(-2x)
6x-4=-10
now subtract 4 from both sides to balance out:
6x=-6
last step since 6 and x are being multiplied you do the opposite and devide on both sides by 6:
x=-1

combine -2x and 8x
that leaves u with 6x - 4 = -10
add 4 to both sides 6x = -6
divide both sides by 6 x = -1
to check this substitute -1 for x in the original equation
