Floppies come formatted, at least for years, and if not the newer operating systems will do it for you. If it is needed to be formatted you will be asked if you want to, or if you have info on it, it will reformat and over-write all the info!

floppy disks are rarely used anymore for many reasons, the first is the limited capacity(1.4mb),which in todays standards is not enough
also with the introduction of memory sticks with solid state memory of up to 8gb many p.c users choose to transfer their files this way,its easier and you can hold much more data
formatting a floppy disk is much the same as formatting a memory stick, you right click "floppy disk" and select format, then when the formatting window appears you choose quick format and then start
if the format fails then check the "write protection" clip on the disk, then format again
i hope this helps
good luck

Put it in the floppy drive. Double click on A: (in my computer..or window's explorer) If a window opens then it is readable and therefore formatted.. although if the window is empty it is blank. Alternatively you will get the message " the disk in drive a: is not formatted. Would you like to format it now?" If it don't format , it's duff they're not very reliable since windows 98 bit the dust........ get a usb key they're much better.

floppy disks are a thing of the past! but you just put it into your floppy drive and then click into my computer, wait a bit then click floppy disk drive then it'll tell you if it needs formating... usually that means it doesn't work... with my computer anyway... so you could try formating it but if it still doesn't work then go out and treat yourself to a new jump drive or a memory stick!

pretty funny now - goes back to the stone age
It takes so long to read you think the thing is broken
Treat the diskette like any other drive
If you have a windows computer greatest chance is that it is formated in windows format
See if it reads or you can copy over it
If not format
If it will not format check the tab on the left bottom ( diskette facing into drive )is pushed forward covering the hole on the bottom
Otherwise it is write protected
You will not be able to write to the drive or format if the hole is open

Bung it in the drive and try to look at it with "My computer". If it needs formatting, Windows will tell you. Now use it the same way as any other storage - it's Drive A:
