John Locke (1632 to 1704 if I recall correctly) wrote that authority rested with the people and required their consent.
If the rule of authority was unsatisfactory to the majority, they had the "Right to Rebel". That's the key you are looking for in the American independence movement. Locke did write that man had the inalienable rights to "Life, Liberty and Property". Jefferson converted this to "Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness" which sounds a bit less crass than property.
These words are seen very early in the Declaration of Independence.

Locke help coined the phrase "Life, liberty, and property." This phrase along with the idea that Man had certain unalienable rights due him that no leader of any country should violate had a large influence on the writer of the Declaration of Independence Thomas Jefferson, who likely studied Locke while he was a diplomat to the country of France and England for the colonies in his early political days.
I'm sure there are more direct quotes which Jefferson "lifted" and re-worded from Locke's writing on the state of man in accordance to Nature and government, but this is the most primary and direct example I can give you at the moment.

Those who perceive homosexuality as an act of deviance do so out of ignorance. Aside from their sexual preference most homosexuals are just regular people. Their lifestyle may occasionally interfere with what you may label as a "normal" existence, but for the most part they are no different than heterosexuals. Just because they may not adhere to the social mores of the majority does not make them deviants. If that were the criteria to be applied then a lot of minorities could be considered deviants.
