Because the smell of a house is determined by the person/people that dwell there. Ever used someone else's pillow? Same concept, except instead of nasty oils in the pillow, it's icky skin cells in the dust that permeates the house. Everyone instinctively finds their own smell normal. Comprende?

I thought I was the only one who noticed this..lol
It's because different people have different scents.
Have you noticed most public buildings smell similar? Think of having thousands of unfamiliar scents mingling in with each other, and that's why.
It must be paradise for a dog.

YOUR SENSE OF SMELL IS ACCUSTOMED TO THE ODORS IN YOUR HOME WHERE WE ASSUME YOU SPEND THE MAJORITY OF YOUR TIME. THE SMELLS IN SOMEONE ELSE'S HOUSE ARE NEW TO YOU AND IMPINGE ON YOUR CONSCIOUSNESS. THE SMELLS OF COOKING, ANIMALS DIRT ETC ALL COMBINE TO MAKE UP THE SMELL IN ANY HOME.

because your sensory receptors for the particular smells in your personal environment stop responding.
In other words, you get used to it, and stop noticing it because your brain just got tired of telling you, "hey, it smells in here."
