2x + 5 = 4(x + 3)

The distributive property on the right side of the equation.

2x + 5 = 4x + 12

Transpose 2x

2x + 5 - 2x = 4x + 12 - 2x

Collect like terms

5 = 2x + 12

Transpose 12

5 - 12 = 2x + 12 - 12

- 7 = 2x

Divide both sides of the equation by 2

- 7 / 2 = 2x / 2

- 7/2 = x

- 3 1/2 = x

- 3.5 = x

Actually when you are factoring a number or equation; what you are doing is finding out what numbers multipled together will give you that number, or what the number will be when reduced to it's simpliest teams.
It is kind of like finding the lowest common denominator when working with fractions.

2x + 5 = 4*(x + 3)
what you have to do first is clear out the paranthesis:

2x + 5 = 4x + 12
now collect your terms using rules of addition and inverse addition:
first take the additive inverse of 5 on both sides of the equation:

2x + 5 - 5 = 4x + 12 -5
take gives you:

2x = 4x + 7
now take the additive inverse of either 2x or 4x and add it to both sides: depending on how far your teacher wants you to go.

We'll use 2x first.
2x -2x = 4x- 2x +7
that gives you:

0 = 2x +7

using 4x instead of 2x next:

2x - 4x = 4x +7 -4x
this gives you

-2x = 7
to find x transpose i.e. divide both sides by -2

-2x/-2 = 7/ -2
don't forget a minus divided by a minus is a plus:

that means:

+1x = - 3 1/2 a minus 3 and one half.
rewrite in standard form

x = 3 1/2 although usually you do not want a fraction, mixed number or decimal in your answers when doing Algebra since the whole idea of Algebra is to reduce to the lowest terms that is easy to work with before you plug in your numbers in place of the letters which you are using to represent the numbers.

The denominators are 3, 4 and 6 and the least common multiple is 12 so multiply both sides bt 12 and simplify.

factor OUT the eqn:

2x + 5 = 4x + 12

combine like terms:

-2x = 7

x = -7/2

-------------

otherwise it is factored.
