why isn't the product iron sulphATE ???
What is the difference between -IDE and -ATE ??
And how do you know when you produce a product with
-IDE or -ATE ???

very simple answer to this one to be classed as an ate the chemical must contain oxygen!!! otherwise it is an ide

Iron Sulphide is FeS

Iron Sulphate is FeSO4. It has four Oxygen atoms in the molecule as well as the Iron and Sulphur.

The name varies with the oxidation state of the sulfur. See the references for explanations and other possibilities, like sulfite, persulfate, and hyposulfite. You'll get these differences fairly early in your first chemistry class.
