I think they invented the vacuum cleaner and then later the carpet. They probably thought of a machine to clean their sod floors before ever coming up with carpet.

Definitely carpet. They used come in strips, then to be cleaned they would seperate the sections, take them outside and beat them with a stick or a broom.
