ignorance and the refusal to do the work required to gain enlightenment.Internet is a great tool;some tools are good, some are bad.People seem to read one or two articles and believe what they read to be correct and true.To really understand anything,a great deal of effort is required to research the information as well as the source. Many people seem to go off half ****** without a true understanding of the position they are supporting.

Asteroid impact. This is only slightly less of a threat than politicians.

Sorry - I know you wanted a serious answer. Seriously, I'm confident that we can confront any threat (including asteroids) if we can just get politics out of the way.

Runaway modernization (also sometimes described as "globalization")

Our political, economic and social system can't maintain a growth-oriented mindset indefinitely into the future. We are continuing to lose more and more jobs to advancements in technology and outsourcing to cheaper foreign labor sources. We'll have a lot more problems that foreign terrorism and lying politicians once we've erased the need for ourselves.

The terrorists are a non-issue, but the politicians scare the h*ll out of me.

Government has been, and always will be, our only threat to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

If a criminal (terrorist) pops up, I can simply shoot him in the head. He who makes laws, is the one to be feared. Can't shoot HIM in the head.

Lazy, uninformed voters who tend to vote by knee-jerk reactions to sound bites and hot topics.

Politicos know they can get almost anything passed if they can tie it to our fears or greed. Global warming, immigration, safety laws, child protection acts, and more are enacted more for fear than because of reasoned, rational discussion and thoughtfulness.

world opinion of the U.S., were like the LAPD of the world. the U.S. is hated in most countries due to the recent decisions made. 9/11 brought a higher respect from the world and it's been torn to shreds over the last 6 years.

Ignorance, lack of education.
In a poll, ~30% of Americans said our own government had something to do with 9/11. God help us all if this is the future of our country.
