From a dead stop, either one would provide the same acceleration. At highway speeds, drive would provide quicker acceleration because from overdrive the trans would have to downshift. As far as top speed, overdrive will theoretically give a higher top speed, but in reality, it depends on the vehicle. I had a 1982 Ford Station Wagon and there was't enough power from the 302 to go over 80 mph in over drive, but would hit a whopping 91 in drive.

Drive would provide quicker acceleration. With an auto transmission, it really doesn't matter. Just put the lever down to overdrive and it will shift as needed in or out of overdirve when it is needed.

If you have a manual, then downshift to a lower gear for quicker acceleration. good luck.

Always use overdrive for everyday driving.

Drive allows you to use the first gears of your automatic transmission; overdrive allows you one more.

Since Drive forfeits the last gear, you'll get quicker accelleration by using Drive, but only at highway speeds. It's like staying in "passing gear" without the upshift.

You cannot select either to drive in all the time..... not at first.... you can reach higher speeds in overdrive, that is what it is for higher speed at lower rpm's to get better gas mileage. Drive is used for towing and drive up and down hills. You would turn overdrive off here because your trans would keep shifting back and forth between the 2.
