An older car may not be the best choice. Isn't there emmison standards in California? Any older car will more then likely not pass the test. I would go for a car that is only a couple of years old because you have to figure you are going to be the one having to fill the tank. Oldies are great and all but they suck the gas dry. Unless you are making $15 an hour and can afford to throw away money.

A used, modern VW bug? I'd suggest an original from the 60's, but you want something safe too. A remake would offer the retro style you want along with modern safety features. Shop around and I bet you could find a used one in the neighborhood of $12,000.
I have no idea on the insurance question. Shop around on that too though! Good luck!

I would go with a good used Volvo...they're very safe, especially in a collision. One of their older commercials shows one being driven off a four- or five story building and nose-diving into the parking lot below. No damage was done to the cabin...just the front end.
Call your parent's insurance agent and ask him/her what would be the safest car also. And by going as a 'rider' on their policy, you can save additional money. Getting good grades in school also helps save money.
More importantly, ALWAYS wear your seat belts and don't speed!

Sweetie: A "retro" car from the 60's or 70's is going to suck gas like a Hummer. Get yourself a slightly used HOnda Civic , Honda Fit, or Mazda 3. They are great, fun cars and you'll get good gas mileage.

The biggest heaviest car I could find.lol
Really I would go with safety. I already worry about mine driving and still have some years to go. I wouldn't get anything new. Just something that worked well and didn't cost much. That way if they run into anything you aren't out much

I would encourage you to go with a Honda. They are GREAT on gas mileage... and are REAL cars. They are super sturdy, is what I'm trying to say.
My first car was a '88 Civic. Man, I LOVED that car!!!
SO AWESOME!!!

Get an old car at first, cause if you wreck it, that way it won't be something that costs you tons to fix, LOL

A cheap hoopty. Insurance is cheaper and it won't matter as much when if it gets banged up.
