If you put your finger in front of its mouth it will think its food and bite you. But when you pick it up, do it with your thumb & forefinger between the turtles front and back legs. I've never put my turtle in the palm of my hand. I only pick it up to move him from one place to another. But he doesn't snap or try to bite me. He seems to reconize me now, he's about a year old. Hope this helps...Good Luck!

They would never bite you, they are very friendly animals and the man at petco told you that because he wants the turtle to get used to the new home first, i was told the same and carried them the next day. When you buy a turtle its a little stressed and that man didnt want you to make mre stressed thats all!

the ppl at petco want the animal to get use to its new envirement and not have it get to stressed out. personly I'd
pick it up for mabey 5 -10 minutes most then leave it alone for the rest of the day. it might bite if it hasnt been socialized, but you can work with it and make it nice thats what I did with my savanna montor

The people at petco said that so it can get used to it's new home like snakes... if you get them and then handle them they might bite or get stressed out....

Maybe you should give it about a week so you can amke sure that it won't get to stressed.... but if you see try to hide when you reach for it you should try to get a little more time....

Good Luck with your new RES...

They can bite but they are not an aggressive breed. I have never been bitten by any turtle. Just be careful how you handle it and don't offer your finger to it...LOL

yea, only if they know you for a while, if you don't want it to bite you don't put your fingers in front of its mouth, and pick it up on its side
