I remember my mother telling me this as a child but cant understand why this is true. Please help!

I think that is another one of those mommy stories, like you can't go swimming for 2 hours after lunch.

The clothes in the dryer are filled with moisture that the heater has to cook out of them and then the fan has to blow out the vent. More wet clothes = more water = more time to dry.

In fact if you overload the dryer so that you cut the air circulation it will take MUCH longer to get all that steamy moisture out of there.

You can test this easily, but remember that the BIGGEST way to increase your dryer time is to have lint in the trap!
I moved in with a couple in Calgary and used their dryer. After an hour of drying I gave up. After I found out their lint trap was FULL (it made a loaf that was fairly solid) and overflowing into the back of their dryer.
I bet it's approx. time = clothes * lint
