The formula for the area of a rectangle is Length by Width or A=L*W
The formula for the volume of a rectangular solid is:
Length by Width by Height or V = L*W*H

A rectangle is a 2d shape, therefore there are not 3 dimensions to it. It is merely length times width.
A rectangular solid has 3 dimensions, and the volume is calculated by multiplying the 3 dimensions. Length times width times height.

You're a bit confused. The formula you have is for calculatiing the VOLUME not the area.
To find the area of a rectangle, you multiply height times width. HXW= area
To find the volume of a rectangle, you multiply length times width times height. LXWXH=volume
You can also add the dimensions for all 4 sides together to get the area...
