Update - I REALLY messed this question up. What I meant to say was who is the best FRANCHISE of all-time. Thanks for your input.

This question can be interpreted in many ways - the best team in any one year? The best run by one core group? Or the best franchise ever/super bowl era?

So - best single year - 1972 Dolphins - reason is obvious

Best core group - I'm sticking to super bowl era here since there are more teams now than in the older days (so it's harder to dominate year after year), and I'm more familiar with these teams - obvious candidates are Brady/Pats, Aikman/Cowboys, Montana/49ers, and Bradshaw/Steelers. I think this comes down to the last two, and I'll give a slight edge to Bradshaw/Steelers.

Best franchise of all time? Packers - reason - most overall championships.

Best of Super Bowl era? Cowboys. Reason: only the Cowboys, Steelers, and Niners have five Super Bowl wins, but the Cowboys were there three other times, and it's better to get there and lose to not get there at all.

If we are talking single season I think people are being myopic to take the 72 fins without explanation. Just because they won every game does not automatically make them the best team. Those close to football understand the thin line between winning and losing; now don't get me wrong they were a great team and need to be commended but in a league with the 32 greatest single season teams I think they'd find some matchup problems.
I think the '78 Steelers and '85 Bears would find the most success (they are generally regarded as the two greatest teams). Their defenses are top line and they both have HOFers on the other side of the ball. Late 80s Niners teams would be solid too, as would early 90s Cowboys. Recent Patriot teams matchup well with some greats as well (primarily with teams who want to hit the deep ball). Lombardi's teams are interesting; smaller agile lineman (aprox 270-280 lbers) and a good backfield could ware down some of the bigger teams, granted rosters are larger now so that may not play. Back to the 72 dolphins, I think they could score on anybody (great OLine, awesome backfiled, go to receiver) but there D is suspect. Yes you can type in "No Name" or Scott, Bonichonni, Fernandez, etc. but they weren't as talented as a lot of others. Who ever would win I think in a league of alltime great teams its foolish to say that one team would dominate, the top teams would maybe be 11-5 the worst maybe 5-11.

irvin_cowboy again shows his ignorance about the NFL. With the answer of "The Dallas Cowboys!!! and ANY OTHER TEAM IN HISTORY THAT IS NOT THE steelers!!! The steelers suck every year!" irvin_cowboy continues to show he knows nothing about football. The Steelers have beat the Cowboys two out of three times in the Super Bowl. Does Irvin really know nothing about football or is his views on the Steelers bias because of the Steelers dominance of the Cowboys on the big stage. This is a question that may never be answered.

Toss up of the Cowboys of the 90's and the Patriots of now! Both teams won three Superbowl's in four year, a feat no other teams have ever been able to accomplished! The Cowboys did it with a team that stayed together for the sake of winning, and the desire to win actually, even in an era of free agency and no salary cap! And although I am a die heart Cowboys fan, I think the Patriots might have the edge on this one. They were able to accomplish this in an era of salary caps and big ego's! The Patriots have had new players each year they went to the Superbowl and those new players were contributing players! In Dallas they proved it was the players, where in New England its more the system than the players.

The Steelers in the 70's! 4 Super Bowls in 6 years! And as for getting there and losing well coming in 2nd in a Super Bowl gets you nothing.

You are asking a question that requires a biased answer. If I were to favor any one team as the best ever, that would be a bias.
