The Smiths without a doubt

This is hard since I am a fan of both in a BIG way....they're so different and so important to their impact in the music world. The Clash is one of the leaders and pioneers for punk music. While Sex Pistols got all the attn....The Clash's longterm effect is probably grounded much more.

The Smiths established a sound that has not been easily replicated. People who DO NOT want to like it..can blame Morrissey's morose, morbid or self defeating songs mixed with wit and sarcasm tend to rub his naysayers in the wrong direction where those who are actually fans..recognize that the music that he and Marr created...effects music in ways that no other English band has or will for years to come.

but I would say based on longevity, The Clash have MORE material to base their strength off of..while the Smiths have a smaller amt of material, it is extremely strong and controversial -to me, as controversial as Clash hits.

I will give the VERY slight edge to the Clash..

if it were The Smiths or the Cure, I'd have gone with The Smiths hands down...I like them both still, but...I prefer The Smiths on that one.

The Clash. I'd take The Cure over The Clash though. I'd take The Cure over a lot of bands. Robert Smith and the Boys are amazing!

I have had this question minimized on my desktop for at least the last three hours. The simple truth is I keep going back and forth, and cannot pick one.

I love the thoughtful songwriting and the mood The Smiths create for me. I love the sheer power of The Clash. Both of them have at least one song on what I consider my tops of all times list.

I listen to both on a regular basis, as in nearly daily, or at least every other day. I guess it really depends on my mood. If I want to be soothed, I listen to The Smiths. If I want to get pumped up, I listen to The Clash.

I know that's not the answer you want, but I really cannot pick a favorite. They have both been so important to me for so long that I suspect that if they could check for music in a blood test, you'd find plenty of both in there (but they'd be swimming in a sea of The Cure).

oh my.

The Clash are calling onto me more because I own more of them than of The Smiths. But that was head-wrenching either way.
