The drive should slot into the tower, provided there is an empty bay. They normally have a blanking plate at the front which can be levered out with a knife. The drive then slots in but you have to plug in a power cable and a data cable (grey ribbon cable). I'm not sure you should try and do this yourself.
Once it is installed, Windows will detect it automatically and will be able to create DVDs and CDs. Windows does support basic CD and DVD writing but you really need a better program (such as Nero) and you really need a good DVD Authoring program if you want to put home movies onto a DVD. Finally you will find that a DVD film is too big to fit onto a blank DVD. You will need to 'shrink' it using a program like DVD Shrink. Do some research on the Internet as it reqires a bit of reading to understand how to do certain things.

Internal means it mounts inside the tower. If you've never installed a CD or DVD drive before, I'd strongly advise getting a computer-savvy friend to help you. (or just take it to a shop and let them do it)

It's not so much replacing the drive that can be tricky - it's getting to the place the drive goes. If you can handle that part, the rest is easy. Your existing drive will have three connections - data, power, and audio. Just connect the new drive exactly like the old one. The old drive will also have a jumper for Master, Slave, or Cable Select - jumper the replacement drive the same way as the one you remove.

If you get an external drive, you can just plug it into a USB port and not have to open the case. But external drives are more expensive, so it's pretty much a wash.

The Home and Professional editions of Windows XP are nearly identical; the only differences are additional features found in the Professional edition that most likely won't appeal to home users. The primary differences, aside from the price and the color of the packaging, are as follows: Windows XP Home Edition Contains basic support for security among multiple users. Built-in support for peer-to-peer networking, but only for up to five computers. The backup utlity is not installed by default, but is included on the CD. Windows XP Professional Edition Includes extended support for security between multiple users on the same machine. Better support for peer-to-peer networking, plus support for joining a "Windows NT domain." The backup utlity is installed by default. The Professional edition includes the following components not found in the Home edition: Administrative Tools (in the Start Menu and Control Panel) Automated System Recovery (ASR) Boot Configuration Manager DriverQuery Group Policy Refresh Utility Multi-lingual User Interface (MUI) add-on NTFS Encryption Utilitiy Offline Files and Folders OpenFiles Performance Log Manager Remote Desktop Scheduled Tasks Console Security Template Utility Taskkill Tasklist Telnet Administrator

Internal burners are pretty easy to install. I assume you already have some sort of CD drive installed already. All you have to do is open your box, remove the screws holding your current drive in place and carefully pull it out. Before you unplug it (there should be a wide cord hooked up and a smaller power cord) notice how it is hooked up. This is how you'll hook up your new one. Turn your computer on and it should work without any additional software but it's always a good idea to install anything that came with it.

You need to make sure that it is an EXTERNAL cd/dvd writer and then yes, you can plug it into a USB port. It should come with all of the software that you need to install it.

If it's internal, that means you have to open the box to install it. It's not very difficult though.

If you don't want the trouble get an external CD/DVD Burner

Depends on where you get it. If you buy it from say Best Buy for a fee they can install it and all of the drivers for you and they will make sure it;s compatible. if you buy it from e-bay/ walmart you will need to install it your self. It will probably include a CD that will install all the necessary software you need to run it. I recommend having ti installed for you, but if you feel confident enough it is a fairly simple procedure.
