It's ancient, for centuries and in the Bible it was considered that the spouse left on earth was released from the original marriage vows and able to marry again.

Just grab a bible, anyone, doesn't matter. Marriage is for life, when one dies, the other is free to marry. It was this way from the beginning. Abraham allow it for the Jews, but God forbid it in the writing of the old testament. New Testament writing state that God hates divorce. this is clearly stated in Mark and Matthew. I think the best is 1 Corinthians chapter 7. If you are a Christian and believe the bible is the word of God then marriage is for life. No divorce, separation yes, but working on reconciliation. And no it's not a Catholic thing, it's a God thing. Oh and by the way "Til death do you part" is not even in traditional Catholic vows. First use was Lutheran that I know of. mid 1500

Here's where you hit a catch 22 phrase .
"Till death us do part".
In the bible it states in the after life you will be reunited with your husbane/wife , so technically speaking your still married even after death because your marriage vow's in a church in front of God is for eternity not just for your life span on this earth.
Many people over look this catch and think well ok now their gone I need a companion and here I go, I was raised in 12 religions and all 12 books state you will be with them in your after life (if you dont end up in hell that is) , so there's your answer once you marry the 1st time , it's your 1st husband/wife your reunited with and tied to for eternity.Make's you think huh.
So how much do you really believe in a man written book?.

I think it means exactly what it says, I personally thinks it means til the day your spouse passes away is when you'll be part from them in the marriage. I also believe marriages should not end in divorce which is why it doesn't state til divorce due us part. If you are very religious you are intended to stay with the person you married no matter what. UNLESS special circumstances such as domestic violence etc.,

That is because Jesus Himself said there would be no marrying or giving in marriage in heaven. We will know each other, but our human life is changed. Not sure if the phrase is referred to in the Bible...would have to research it, but much of the marriage service is ...like leaving your father and mother, and cleaving to your wife....the two becoming one flesh, etc.

Marriage as practiced in today was designed and originated by a combination of society and various religions. Some parts of marriage ceremonies are actually based on pagan traditions and some are based on Christianity. Certain phrases and traditions are almost impossible to attribute to any one person.
Samans, please remember that not all marriages have anything to do with God. We do have seperation between church and state. I was not married in a religious ceremony, but by a Justice of the Peace. All promises I made were made directly to my husband and based on personal honor, not religion.

I'm not sure about the source of the wedding vows, but you're probably right that it's tradition.
Nevertheless, a marriage is a promise to God by two people who give an oath that they'll live together and build a relationship. God doesn't break his promises, why should it be acceptable for us to break ours?
I believe adultery is the only cited cause in the bible as to a legitimate reason for divorce, although I'd also throw in mental or physical abuse.
Other than that, problems can be worked out. Solving them is what helps us grow as people, closer to each other and ultimately closer to God.

Well it's an apt statement of the intention of marriage. Too bad it's not always based on fact.
Maybe it should be modified to "'til death, or some other similar circumstance (like divorce) do us part"

Well, considering the vows are spoken before God, and Holy Matrimony is a covenant between two people and God, it is naturally "till death" because ALL COVENANTS between God and his people are "Unto Death"......
