No. It's an expression. You are either safe or out.

"Tie goes to the runner" is an expression. In baseball, if the play is to close to call where it looks as if the runner got to the base before the ball, hence it looks like a tie, then the runner is called safe. In other words, the umpire is looking at the first baseman, once the ball is in his glove, he immediately looks at the runners foot to see if it is on the bag or past the bag yet, in that split second where it is possible the first baseman got the ball first but the runners foot was not there but it was by the time the umpire looked down, it's a "tie" and the runner is safe.

I have witnessed serval tie encounters in baseball.

The tie always goes to the runner due to the fact he's not out on the play.

Technichally, no. But if the ump sees the ball in the mitt at virtually he same time as the runner steps on the base and he could call either way, the rule is made for that to give the runner the benefit of the doubt.

No. The rules, in fact, imply the opposite - they say that the runner must reach the base *before* the tag or the catch. If they arrive at the same time, then the runner wasn't there before the tag and is thus out.

They discussed this on a game recently. There is no "tie goes" rule. The runner must arrive before the ball. At speed its too hard to determine a tie so umps use that rule instead. I was always taught the the "Tie" rule, but I was taught alot of wrong things.

The phrase relates to whether the ball or runner got to the base first and gives the umpires a basis of how to call a close play at a base.

There is no such rule anywhere in the rule book. The "tie to the runner" is really more of a playground thing.

The tie always goes to the runner.

Some times umpires miss these calls, but it is in the rule book
