My dad has a whitish-gray standard bred horse named Snowflake.

I went to watch her race Saturday night & she won!!

Anyway.. She seems to get nervous around me & I want to make her like me.. Any tips?
Or do you think she was just stressed out after her race the night before?

Also, does any one know where I can buy some books on Harness horses? I'd like to get my Grooms License.

My dad is her trainer,

and I know better than to make fast movements, I've been around horses most of my life.
I just felt like this particular one didn't like me.

Congrats on the win....and the racer may have been on edge, since there routine is changed before racing..an they know what's coming up. Carrots or mints when she is on her normal routine will help you make a friend. To take out a license, contact the track strewards abd they will supply you with info on what must be done to satisfy the state requirements.

The best place to go for information is:

The USTA is the governing body for all harness racing in America. To my knowledge, you do not need a license to be a groom, but you do need one to be a drive or owner. They even have a youth program where you could harness race ponies instead of the real thing until you're old enough.

Race horses are under a lot of stress and do not like changes in their routine. That includes being introduced to new people. My suggestion is spend time around her and give her treats if it is ok with your dad and the horse's trainer. Assisting with her grooming can help as well.

Do you make fast movement near her ?
What kind of body movements are you making near her ?, If you talk with your hands (like some people do) you could be moving your hand around to much in front of her face.
Some horses get nerves when you walk up to them like a predator (direct path towards their head/neck), Walk in on an angle to their shoulder.
Let her smell you before you touch her and talk to her.
And
You should groom her and give her treats a lot that will help

Hope that helps, Good luck

are you sure it's not just a high-strung horse? if not, maybe you were too 'hyper' around her. horses hate that. but there is a possibility of her still being jumpy from the race. good luck!
