A group of us are feeling crazy. The flights are so-so priced, so we are interested in driving from Zurich toward Amsterdam. By train it is about 11 hrs by night, but it is often a little quicker by car, yes? Any help would be good, thanks!

A site I've used for this kind of thing, and one of the best I've personally come across, is www.mappy.com - where it claims that the express route from Zurich to Amsterdam is just over 8 hours drive (776km), and taking the non-toll route adds another 50-odd kilometres (824km) and half an hour or so. If you type in the exact addresses, you can an even more accurate distance and likely time for the drive.

I haven't travelled the route by train, but www.raileurope.com claims that it'll take about 8 hours by train, assuming no delays.

'Mappy' gives detailed directions and toll costs, plus a rough estimation of fuel costs. All of these things, time included, are obviously best guesses, based on speed limits - because it clearly can't determine how long you take for traffic problems, stops or detours!

I've driven that route before, and it's a nice drive off the motorways if you have the time and inclination - I took a big detour and stayed in a village hotel near Luxembourg on the way there. I've driven in the other direction (Amsterdam to Zurich) a couple of times, but gone via France and Geneva - and stayed two nights in small hotels on the way. A very beautiful drive!

You can do this journey by car in approx 8 hours - depending on traffic conditions; maybe even less when driving at night.

If you go by train the journey will take 8-9 hours.
