Not so much a quote as a funny story. A conductor was conducting his orchestra through a Phillip Glass piece -- one of those long repetitive pieces that might play the same chord pattern for 32 bars or more. At one point, the conductor had lost count of how many repeats of the current pattern had been played and leaned down to ask the concertmaster, who responded: "That's your job, not mine!"

In a more serious vein...
"So when the last and dreadful hour
This crumbling pageant shall devour
The trumpet shall be heard on high,
The dead shall live, the living die,
And music shall untune the sky."
-- John Dryden, "A Song for St. Cecilia's Day"
That's just the conclusion... I like the entire poem very much.

Don't remember the exact wording of the quote, but Stravinsky once said that architecture is frozen music.
He also said the music is a "speculation in Time".

i admire the incomplete lyric that replaced into stumbled on while Jimi Hendrix died. on the beginning up, they believed it to be a suicide notice, until eventually they stumbled on the different lyrics that went with it :~ "the story of existence is faster than the blink of a watch. the story of affection is hi and so long. until eventually we meet returned"
