I was a chainsmoker for 4 straight years, I'm only 23 years old, and I quit smoking cold turkey about a month ago....the first 2 weeks where hell but now Its easier, I'm just taking it day by day.....but just recently I started coughing up chunks of black and brown crap, there was also a little blood in it at first. Now theres no blood but every morning I have to go to the bathroom and I start coughing really bad and all these gross chunks come out.....when will this stop?!?! I cough a lot now, people are like "Dude you gota stop smoking" I'm like "dude i did quit, a month ago!" When will this stop, its kinda scaring me, I don't have medical insurance so I can't see a doctor.......

ah yes - i remember this..... it seems to be one's body cleaning out all the junk. it made me feel bad, and almost made me go back to smoking. however, it FINALLY went away. give it a few more weeks & get some throat lozenges & tea to soothe your throat.

I know you don't have insurance, but you really should see a health care professional. Maybe your town has a free clinic, or maybe even the health department. Anytime you are coughing up stuff that is black or brown, it's not a good sign. You may have a more severe underlying problem that you really don't want to get out of control.

you can relax, this is really quite normal. Your lungs are clearing themselves of the garbage you put into them over the four years you smoked. This can last up to three months, after all it didn't build up over night. So consider it a good sign, your lungs are cleaning out and healing up from all the damage.

You need to see a doctor ASAP. Check your area for a community free clinic or the health dept.
