It totally disapeared? Wow! Have you checked in Windows Explorer in the Documents and Settings folder to see if the Profile is still listed? If so, then you can re-enable the account. If not, then somebody deleted it.

Regardless of these things, it sounds like you either have a bad infection or somebody is messing with your computer. Do you share this computer with others and/or do others live in your home and have had friends over recently?

If you are running WinXP Pro or WinXP Media Center addition you can go into Local Security Policy and see if the account has been locked out.

Click on Start-All Programs-Administrative Tools-Local Security Settings.

Once Local Security Settings is open, click on Local Policies-Security Options.

Locate Deny Logon Locally and see if your group membership is included in this list by double clicking on this label. If it is, click to select it and then remove it from the list.

Next, go into Computer Mangement by clicking Start-All Programs-Accessories-System Tools-Computer Management.

Once there, click on Users and Groups and select Users. Click on your Account name and see if a check mark is in Locked Out, and if so, remove it.

If this does not work, click Start-Run and type in control userpasswords2, and click OK.

While you are in Local Security Policy, you can look around and see if your account is also being denied other priveleges and rights. Don't change anything unless you are certain it should be changed.

If you would rather go to the source and suspect somebody has tampered with your system as a joke, a mean one but still, a joke, go talk to the people who share your computer and ask them what they did and have them reverse it. This way you can aviod mucking around in these security and user and groups settings. If you can get the person responsible to just fess up and fix it that would be your best bet.

There are so many areas that some joker or malicious person can do if they got their hands on an Administrative account that it is not possible to explain them all here. There is also Group Policy which can lock down many things in the computer and basically make it impossible to use. There are things which can be done in Group Policy which could make a reinstall of the operating system neccasary.

This really sounds much more like somebody messing around than a virus. A virus usually attacks your system in different ways than locking out accounts and doing simular things as changing passwords or the account type, etc. While it is not impossible for viruses to act in such manners, this is not the normal behavior of a virus. To repeat myself again, it truly sounds like somebody is playing not so funny pranks on you. Find that person and you can get him/her to reverse what s/he did.

Good luck and I hope you get this settled soon.

P.S. It wouldn't hurt to run a full scan with your Internet Security suite or Anit-Virus program. If you do find out you have an infection which your program can't deal with there are websites on the net with volunteers who deal with these issues and help free of charge. Type in hijackthis into your search engine and you will get results of websites which help users use HijackThis program to deal with bad infections. There are several steps you have to do to clean up a system, but these kind folks will walk you through them and do not expect you to be any sort of expert user.
