What is the source of it? Even when we see it drawn in cartoons,it is a light-bulb, yet we know what it represents!

The chief medium of information about the world for a human is visual, hence light represents the light of understanding. The Zen teacher, Thich Nhat Hahn, when speaking of addressing a problem often advocates shining "the light of understanding" on the problem, calling it "deep looking".
