Well, let's check and see what could happen.

Sox wins - Yanks wins

6-0 -- Boston lead grows by +6
5-1 -- Boston lead grows by +4
4-2 -- Boston lead grows by +2
3-3 -- no change
2-4 -- NY gains +2
1-5 -- NY gains +4
0-6 -- NY gains +6

Plus, any result of 3-3 or better for Boston secures their winning the season series (currently 7-5), meaning that the Yankees would have to BEAT them for the AL East title; they'd still lose in a tie.

Remainder of season (aside from BOS-NY series):

Boston -- 31 games remaining, 18 home, 13 road, don't have to leave Eastern time zone again. Toughest non-NY opponent: Minnesota (.515, 4 games). Four off days (including tonight).

New York -- 32 games remaining, 16 home, 16 road, still have one distant visit (Kansas City). Toughest non-Boston opponent: Seattle (.570, 3 games). Three off days.

The Red Sox have the easier road from here.

I think what the asker meant by splitting the series is that after this one, there is another Yanks-Sox 3 game series the weekend of the 14, 15, and 16th in September. Will make it a 4 series series againt the Sox that the Yankees could possibly win two of the series making it a split of the series series. Got it.
Now, don't worry about the Yankee's.
It's a long time before the season is over and when the dust clears, the Yanks will be in the playoffs.
And stranger things have happened...there's still a chance to take the division.
By the time Steinbrenner finishes cracking the whip who knows what the final standing will be.
That's my 2¢.

Well, we won't know if they sweep the Red Sox. The Yanks did take 3 of 4 against the Tigers the week before, and sweep 3 in Cleveland the week before that. Don't think for a moment that the Yankees are afraid of the Red Sox. Remember, in 1978, it was 14 back on July 20, and it was 6 1/2 back on September 1, and they won. This is 1978 all over again. Especially if Eric Gagne plays Bob Stanley like he's been doing. And Manny Ramirez continues to play George Scott. (Even if David Porktiz is built more like him.) It will happen. I've been saying that since the beginning, and with half the lead eliminated, I'm still more right than wrong.

I don't think either team will sweep...but the race isn't over regardless of what happens. I still think the Sox will take the East but the Yankees won't back down until the Sox officially clinch. If the Red Sox actually do go into Yankee Stadium and sweep the Yankees it will be very hard for the Yankees to come back in the East. My prediction...Sox take 2 of 3.

Well its going to be like 10 Games the Yankees will be back of the Red Sox because they'll sweep the Yankees as well as the White Sox if that's happens then you got a New Champion in the A L East.

The yankees should concentrate on the wild card because the Red Sox schedule the rest of the way is really easy. They play the last month against everyone in the east. That means Tamba bay, Baltimore and Toronto. They have abused those teams all year. It's wildcard or nothing for the yankees.

Should the Yankees lose two or three to the Red Sox it will be very difficult for them to come back and win the division with only about 35 games left to play. However, They could lose two or three to the Red Sox and still have a shot at the wild card. Should the Yankees get to the playoffs they will be a real handful for any team to beat in a short series.

If the Sox sweep, it is over

If the Yankees sweep, then they still have to play .750 ball to win

If they split then it will be closer, but still the Red Sox win

In the end, it doesn't make a difference, the red sox win and the yankees lose either way.

The olny way the Yankees can win the AL East is if they sweep this series, and play well until the next Yankee - Sox series.

So in order for them to win the east they need to sweep both of the Sox series.

If they are swept their AL East and playoff hopes are over.
