History is the sum of reporting on past events. Over time as tales are retold first by witness and then by those who read their accounts and then by those who synthesize all of the information and attempt to give context to what happened. To limit history to mere names and dates only trivialize the event. Is it more important that the American Civil war was fought between or 1861 and 1865 or that it was fought and there were 40 years of events and people that brought the United States to that point and 40 years of events after it ended that were directly related to it.

History is a thematic undercurrent to human events. But do remember, that for the most part, it is written by the winner, and those who didn't win only years later get their story told.

My high school history teacher said that it is "...the memory of a nation...".
As individuals remember when they were young, grew up, worked, married, etc., nations remember things in much the same way, but it is called "history" rather than "memories".

history is nothing more than cause and effect - that would mean that you cannot study anything in a vacuum that you have to study what led up to the event in which you are interested and what the effects of that event were after the fact.
