RPMs are a function of the engine and variable. If it sounds like it is screaming, it is probably revving faster than it likes.

I downshift coming into the corner for additional braking, then am on the throttle from about halfway through and out.

Today engines produce torque al low rpm's. Up-shift keeping engine rpm's as low as possible. Get into the highest gear as soon as reasonsbly comfottable for you, the car and motor. There's no need to scream a motor between gears.

When starting out on level ground fron a dead stop 1,000 rpm's is plenty for a gental start that will not eat -up your clutch disc and pressure plate.
