No. Its not true.
Mars will be so big tonight that it will take up half the sky. It might actually be so close to the Earth that it will crash into the moon so that the moon appears blood red and will appear to vanish completely behind some giant shadow.
Then the giant turtle that supports the Earth will swallow the sun.
Since we will all be dead by tomorrow, feel free to empty your bank account and go on a spending spree.

No. This myth started in 2003 when Mars did come unusually close to Earth, and has been repeated every summer ever since. But even in 2003 it never got close enough to look like anything other than a bright star. This year Mars will not pass close to Earth until winter, and even then it won't be as close as it was in 2003.

It's not true. Mars will be somewhere on the other side of the Sun. I've been getting that email from unusually thick friends, relatives and classmates for a long time now. It's so easy to get people to believe a ridiculous rumour.

The only thing that will be visable on August 27, 2007 is actually a lunar eclipse, around 4:51am EDT. The moon will have a reddish glow - I think thats about as close as we'll get to seeing the "red" planet this August.
