I cannot find the@ on my laptop it is not recognising the usual keys @and shift key is there another keyboard option /command..I can use

Ah, the age old problem of microsoft thinking the world is America. I think you will find in on one of the number keys, try shift and 3, where the £ should be. Then go to the control panel and change the keyboard and input settings to UK English, delete the American settings and restart the computer.

It is better to simply set the keyboard driver setting to match the keyboard you have.
START menu, SETTINGS / Control Panel / regional and Language options, LANGUAGES tab, DETAILS.
under settings make sure keyboard is set to match regional settings.
