Cornrows are just a way of keeping long hair neat. Its also a style. Some black men like having thier hair long, and its naturally thick...if you havent noticed, not saying your oblivious to it or anything..honestly. So they keep it long.
When going to see a judge, many a time a judge might interpret the conrrows as a symbol of "gansta" or "street-man" By removing them, and by removing thier association with "gangstas" and "street-men" they sometimes won't be judged by their apprearance, but more by their appeal. It does not mean its not appropriate for society. In away its kind of respect to the judge, showing that they take it seriously. That they are not just another guy from the streets who has been brought to court, be convicted, and thrown into jail..that they take the case seriously.

In your question as to Why do Black men wear their hair in braided cornrows (cornrolls)
I am a black man, I have never wore my hair in this manner so generalizing is sort of a raciest remark. There are fewer black men that wear this hair style than wear this style.
As far as to when and where they choose to wear these styles is really up to the individual.
Why when you go on a formal date do you go to the salon, get your hair done in a different way.
When you are going to attend a very important function such as a business meeting do you wear a business suit and your hair in a different way than you do on a daily basis?
Only the individual that wears his/her hair in this manner can answer that question.
Do you have the same issue with white men that wear their hair in cornrows? Also do you have an issue with black women that wear their hair in cornrows or white women that wear their hair in cornrows?
Since I can not answer your question and I doubt others on this forum will be able to unless they wear their hair in this manner.
The next time you see a black man with this hair style, walk up to him a say I am doing research on why black men wear cornrows and the reason they would take the cornrows down and under what circumstances would they take them down. See what type of reaction you get from them.
I hope this has been of some use to you, good luck.

I like the corn row hair. It is corn row, not corn roll.
The hairstyle is very appropriate for anyone who likes it. It is not limited to "black men" as your stated in your question. Corn rows are very expensive to to have placed in your hair. I don't know what it would have to do with going to a courthouse.
Where I live, there are beautiful hairstyles worn by black men that are not corn rows. Anyway...glad to have the opportunity to answer your questions. P.S. I am caucasian.

Because society see cornrows as an urban hip-hop style.. They see corn rows and instantly think that the person his bad. When you see two people, one in baggy pants, t-shirt and corn rows the other you see in a suit and tie with a nice hair cut.....who are you going to assume is the criminal/bad guy????
Perception is everything in our society.

Warning!: Do not feed the Troll. It is gathering stupidity for it's hibernation. If at all the Troll fails to hibernate, it will be euthanized and promptly disposed of. Trolls are the leading cause of idiotic rants and postings. If confronted by a Troll, do not attempt logic as it will be confused and return often. Ignore it, and it will dissolve into obscurity. Thank you, and Good Day!

Wowww.... First its not cornROLL its CORNROWS!!! And before you ask a stupid question you have to understand what you are talking about. And stop watching television. Its full of biased stereotypes. Because it seems like you have this imaginary mindset caused by a lack of facing or seeing reality. Have you ever talked to a black man? I would have to assume....NO!!!!
Probably on BET. Never face to face.

We remove the braids because we have to look proper not because it isn't accepted in society. When a black man gets his hair cut he looks cleaner and you have to look clean and proper if you're going before a judge!!

My friend, which I've known him for 6 years, looks incredibly scary when he puts on his 'I'm a thug with cornrows' look on him.
Were he ever to commit a crime, I'm sure he wouldn't want that look to appear in court.

I work in one of the courts in Washington DC and from my observation, black men DO wear cornrows to court. Also, I believe they wear cornrows in their daily lives because they like how they look.

its the same as you wearing a nice outfit infront of the court.
cornrows are casual, and to go infront of a judge, you want to be presentable.
