Hi, I am thinking about what career I want, and was wondering, if I want to be a college prof. what degree will I need?, I was thinking about a B.S in Business, and then a Masters in it as well. Will this qualify me to teach? Or will I need to take educational courses as well? I am sort of on the fence between teaching college or elementary (grades K-6, I would have to get a B.S in Early Ed.). If you could include salary comparisons between the two I would appreciate it. Thanks

Most colleges do require a masters before teaching, but it depends. An instructor has little or no experience and a bachelors or masters, depending on the college, and earns 39,899 average. An assistant professor requires a doctorate and 4-7 yrs exp 54,571 average. An associate prof requires a doctorate and 7yrs exp and they make an average 58,000-75,000. You do not have to take education classes to teach college. The average salary for elementary is 48,700 (which does not include special ed.)

College or university professors will probably earn more, but will require more education - at least a MS to start with. The competition is also more fierce at that level. There is also a feeling of "publish or perish" at the university level, meaning if you're not doing research, you're not going to advance your career. If you're in the community college system, it's probably not so bad.

Generally speaking the preferred degree for a college instructor is a Ph.D. No education courses are required to teach in a college unless you are teaching education classes.

The comparisons vary from state to state and from school district to school district .They may even vary by subject taught.

Somewhat similar variations exists in colleges.

I went to varsity for a semester at a appropriate ranked equine college (in basic terms wasn't the wonderful extra healthy for me, unfortuantely). i understand a number of my professors had doctorates, yet no longer all of them. i think of in maximum coaching fields it is often time-honored to have a masters with a coaching certification.
