William "Buffalo Bill" Cody was known for killing many buffalo in the west. Thanks to him, thousands of buffalo were slain, wiping out the food supply for many Native Americans. He didn't even use them--they were just left to rot. In the late 1800's, he began "Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show." This included Sitting Bull, Annie Oakley (aka, "Little Sure Shot," and several others which portrayed an idealized version of the west. A lot of our beliefs about the west came from his shows, rather than from any true knowledge of the facts.
