I was 31 and had two kids by then. It was the best thing I ever did...no more waiting patiently for someone to pick me up, no more sitting at bus stops and train stations, no more depending on other people. I love driving now, and I love the freedom it gives. Anyone out there who doesn't drive because of fear, find a sympathetic driving instructor , and give it a try. Independance is the best gift you can give yourself.

Age 15. I went to Driver's Education and was given my license at that age because I made an A. I think the laws have changed now.

I was 25 when I got my first driver's license. My parents wouldn't let me learn to drive because they considered me too immature. I also had no bicycle. All my brothers and my sister had bicycles, but I had to share one with my mother.

Only a senior citizen would appreciate this next:

The day after I got my driver's license, I bought an old Ford, in pretty good shape, and named it "Baby Jane," because I figured as a new driver, everyone would wonder pretty soon "Whatever happened to it."

I never needed a drivers license until I was 24 and married.
I needed it to finish school and go grocery shopping. It
didn't make me feel free, it was more of a necessity. I like
to drive, but not at night and not long distances.

I was 16. My mom gave me a car for my sixteen birthday and I was the most popular person around. On weekends, that car would be spilled over (at least 9 to 10 people). I was king of the road.

I was a late bloomer. Didnt get mine until I was 19. I grew up in Philadelphia and people didnt need cars. Then I moved to California and I'm surprised they dont hand out cars with the Welcome Wagon. Everybody has to have one. I took full advantage of it. It's wonderful to be able to drive to the mountains, turn around and go to the beach. That was 1957 and I've only had one moving violation. Lots of parking tickets, but that doesnt show up on your record.

I was 16, lived in Cleves, Ohio. Can't say it made me feel free. I lived in the middle of no where and wasn't going to be driving a lot.

I was... oh my god, I can't remember! I think I was 16. Mom and dad were going on a trip and leaving me with my grandma so Mom taught me to drive in a week, then took me to get my license. I passed the first time. I can't believe I don't remember how old I was... but I know that I was the first one in my group to get one.

October of 1972, shortly after I turned 16, and no, my daddy was the fuzz, so freedom was not a feeling I knew anything about until I was REALLY grown.
