My daughter was born at the end of March in Michigan. Still quite chilly. Most people do frilly little dresses. I bought a really cute footy sleeper, matching hat and blanket instead. She was more comfortable, still cute, and she got more use out of the sleeper than she would have a frilly little dress.
I know that you are having a boy, but I would still just get a cute terry cloth sleeper, blanket and hat.

The easiest choice is a long sleeve sleeper (a warm one) with the little footsies. Or if you do a onesie, you can double up on blankies and use a hat--- 'specially if the trip is short. My poor girl sweat a lot that first week, becuase i was paranid and kept overbundling her.
I didn't buy much for my kid becuase i got SOO much at the baby shower, but i wish i would have had more fun shopping for a special take-home outfit! That would have helped the time go by, i think.

My son was born in mid-November in NC. We came home on a nice warm day (jeans and a t-shirt for the adults). Babies need one more layer because they cannot regulate their temps yet. My son came home in a little hat, a onesie under a medium-weight sleeper. I think we just put a blanket on him in his carrier. We didn't wrap him up in it.
One thing that is amazing for cooler weather is the bag you zip the baby into in the carrier. It has elastic so it just slips around the edges of the carrier. My son never wore a jacket as an infant. I just zipped that thing up so only his face was showing. It was great! They're in the carseat area of Babies 'R Us for as little as $20.
P.S. There are no stupid questions when it comes to the first baby! Congrats!

Hi,
I have put a little list down for you.
Baby Mittens or socks to prevent baby from scratching face!
A lovely warm blanket and a little hat if its cold.
For Baby to Go Home - Baby will need an infant car seat, - most hospitals will not discharge baby without a seat, in addition to the clothing worn in hospital baby will need a hat, coat, and blanket.
Baby grow.

Our son was born last Sunday. We brought him home in a super soft long sleeved onesie, an infant cap, and a light blanket. Since your baby will be born later in the fall, add a warm fuzzy blanket and you'll be all set. Remember comfort above cuteness, and don't make him too warm, he really won't be outside that long, if you're taking him home in the car- he'll be going from warm hospital to warm car. Good luck on the birth and congrats~

I bought the wrong size. I showed up at the hospital w/ 3 outfits in size 0-3mths and they were all too big. He looked ridiculous. So, he came home in a HUGE onesie that was "hanging" on him. And, yes, he was wrapped in a blue blanket w/ a matching hat. So, bring newborn size outfits, 3 should be enough (just in case of poop or spit up). Bring something comfortable, onesies w/ feet are nice because the hospital is so cold.

Just a beannie hat, a one piece sleeper, socks and a onesie. Just wrap the blanket tightly around after in the car seat! Don't worry, you'll have heat on in the car and you pull the car to the front of the hospital and then home. my first was Oct 18th and we went everywhere on public transpo starting at 5 days. She was never hardly sick!

We brought my son who was born in December home in a long sleeved jumper that buttoned from neck to feet, it was a soft baby blue with airplanes on it. He had on matching socks and a little baby tabogan. We also wrapped him in a blanket. Just make sure it is something comfy dont play dress up quite yet, I know it is tempting. Also dont over due it with clothes, remember being hot can make the baby sick. You should dress them in one layer with blankets on if it is very cold. When you get in the car with heat you can take blankets off and baby will be comfy.

When mine came home, they wore a hat and sweater and booties that my step-mother had crocheted. Under it, a onesie, and a diaper. Wrapped him up in a matching hand-crocheted blanket all pale aqua blue.
Very soft and snuggly.
This is really for YOU to have a fond memory, and a mental picture of your son for when he is grown.
Now, once a year, my son-who is 32-puts that little tiny cap on top of his head and mugs for the camera. It is very sweet of him.
The most important thing is a car carrier from the very first ride home.
Good luck, mommy.

My son was born at the end of May, but even though it was warm out, I had him in a onesie, a hat, mittens, and socks. We wrapped him up in a receiving blanket, but had to remove that to put him in his car seat. (Note: Buy a cushion for his head designed for carseats so that his head won't loll around too much, and stay in the back with him because they have absolutely no neck control when they're born!) Since your son is going to be born in colder weather, perhaps you should dress him in a little jammie set with feet instead of a onesie. Don't forget the socks, the hat, and the mittens, and also have plenty of blankets in the car with you! Congrats.
