I would say make sure he takes a safe sitter course that is offered in many communities for a very small fee. My 11 year old daughter just completed one. It teaches a lot of info that parents may forget or not think of in the first place and a child may feel more prepared after having completed the course. it also would depend on how young the younger sibling is and the main issue is whether the 11 year feels he/she is ready for this huge responsibility. Have a good heart to heart talk and really listen to avoid any tragedies in the future. Good luck and God Bless.

In most localities, a person younger than 14 isn't allowed to be hired as a baby sitter, therefore, an 11 year old is definitely too young to stay alone and worse to be allowed to sit another younger child. In a child protection case before a family court, the parent(s) could lose both children for neglecting their supervision.

No way! It is illegal to leave anyone under 12 alone. And to leave him with a younger sibling?

He may be responsible but will he really know what to do in an emergency situation?

I understand that sometimes you have to do what you have to do. but 11 is too young especially at night.

Absolutely NOT! In some states this is illegal, so you better check with your local authorities on it. An hour or so during the day is ok, but it's a different story if it's at night. Hire a babysitter for both the kids if you need to go out for a few hours.

I belive that 11 years old is to young to stay at home alone at night i am just one of those mothers that wouldnt do it. But if you feel that your 11 year old is mature enough than thats your decision.
best of luck

if you have a big house then i dont think so..... becuz its just not safe. But if you have a small house, town house, semi-house or an apartment then i think thats fine. Its also based on what time your leaving him. if it doesnt go past 11:00 then you can but then it would be to late if it goes past 11:00. Its also based on ur envirement.. like the kind of envirement u have in ur neighborhood.. if its safe or are they a lot of gangs and criminal activities. hope this helps

In the majority of cases, yeah, 11 is too young. I would at least hold out until 13.
