Because lots of Jews lived/live in north london. Spurs fans also chant Yids at us (Arsenal fans).

Arcadia... what are you on about, it wasn't said as a racist term at all by the arsenal fans, you obviously don't know who's on the arsenal board then!

Since the 1920s it has been a common perjorative and offensive term for a Jew, used only in an anti-semitic and racist way.

Its use in football as a description for Spurs fans began in the early 1970s, when Arsenal and Chelsea fans started to use it as a racist reference to the supposed large number of Jews living in the Tottenham area, and also to the fact that the club was largely Jewish owned.

In more recent years, some younger Tottenham fans with no understanding of the history of the word (and who are largely not even Jewish themselves anyway) have begun to term themselves as "yids" as a sort of reverse "badge of honour".

The point is, when all correct thinking people want to kick the evil of racism out of football, why the authorities do nothing to stop people using this deeply offensive word. You would surely never refer to Rio Ferdinand or Louis Saha as "coons" ...why do the same kind of thing to anyone who is Jewish?

It certainly annoys the hell out of me..because even though I'm not a Tottenham fan , I am Jewish.

The word Yid (Yiddish: ייד, IPA: [ʲid]) is a slang Jewish ethnonym. Its usage may be controversial in modern English language. The correct pronunciation is [ʲid] (rhyming with deed), the way Yiddish-speakers say it. When pronounced [ʲɪd] (rhyming with did), it can generally be perceived as a pejorative—and is used as a derogatory epithet by antisemites.[1]

Supporters of Tottenham Hotspur F.C. adopted a nickname "Yid" (or "Yiddo") and often identify as "Yid Army". Used as a badge of pride, such usage is not without a controversy.

flower19602003- just ignore "normg", hes an idiot whose vocabulary consists of the words, "man u cheats", how ironic that he lives in the USA and supports an Italian team! Block him like i did and the cockroache will bother you no more my friend.
