Probably by now your cousin has just about everything for the baby's room. Lots of people like to buy clothes because they really are so cute, so if you fancy buying an outfit, get a larger size - say 3-6 months or 6-9 months but make sure the outfit is suitable for the weather conditions at the time the baby will be that age. Alternatively, you could buy something like a Mothercare or Next voucher because it could be used for other cute outfits as and when necessary, or essential items. What about putting a box together with lots of little accessories in it, like socks, bibs, - and then some items for general use, like disposable nappies, baby shampoo, soap, feeding dish, baby cup, plate, plastic spoons..... anything that would come in useful in the coming months really. Take a look round Mothercare or Mamas and Papas and you will be spoiled for choice - there's so much and so many cute things. Enjoy shopping!

This is what a newborn baby REALLY needs for the first few weeks at home. It's not much.

♥ 5-10 onesies or rompers, depending on how often you want to do laundry
♥ 5-7 baby sleepers or nightgowns
♥ 1 cold weather sleeper if necessary
♥ 5-7 pairs of baby socks
♥ 1-2 newborn hats, depending on climate
♥ 2 packs of disposable diapers or enough cloth diapers for at least two days. Newborns can soil up to 10 diapers per day.- I recommend Huggies Gentle Care or Pampers Swaddlers.
♥ 1 pack of disposable wipes or 10 cloth wipes
♥ Waterproof pad for diaper changes
♥ 3-5 baby washcloths
♥ 1-2 hooded towels, if desired. Adult towels will work, too.
♥ 1 bottle of gentle baby wash
♥ Baby nail clippers
♥ Baby cotton swabs and rubbing alcohol for umbilical cord.
♥ A Crib, Cradle, Co-Sleeper or Bassinet
♥ 3-4 fitted sheets for crib, cradle, co-sleeper or bassinet
♥ 5-7 lightweight blankets.
♥ 1-2 heavier blankets, depending on climate, Sleeper blankets work great.
♥ 10 burp cloths
♥ 5-8 bottles, if you're bottle feeding
♥ Breastfeeding pillow, if desired
♥ Car Seat

That's it! While there are many baby products on the market that make a parent's life easier, most are wants, not needs. While it may be tempting to buy every gadget on the shelf, remember, your baby will be just as happy with the basic items that he or she really needs.

1. A safe place to sleep (crib usually)

2. A car seat they wont let you leave hospital without one

3. A dozen or so onesies or undershirts (unless you want to do laundry every day or two)

4. A dozen or so sleepers (easier than outfits and so much warmer for babies in the fall/winter)

5. 1-2 outfits and socks (for pictures)

6. 2 baby wash clothes and 2 hooded towels j&j head to toe body wash (you are gonna have to bath them at some point) (use the bathroom or kitchen sink will be so much easier)

7. 2 dozen receiving blankets or burp clothes for feedings and burping only

8. 4 crib sheets - 4 warm blankets for sleeping (babies spit up a lot - even in bed hours after eating)

9. 3-4 really soft blankets for swaddling baby (favorite burrito wrap to calm a fussy baby)

10. 1-2 baby hats to help keep the heat in (maybe lil booties too - i never used them)

11. Wipes and Diapers (i would get size 1 - nb diapers can be too small for 7-8 lbs babies - the average size babies are these days)

12. Optional - baby swing, infant carrier, mobile, and other fancy things that may distract or comfort a baby when you are not the only thing they want

Good luck

Let's start with the essentials:
Diapers
Wipes
Enough onesies for two weeks, if you get behind on laundry. Plus, they go through a lot of them. You will want sizes 0-3 months and 3-6 months most likely.
Same with sleepers. They come in packages just like onesies do.
A few bibs
Burp rags
A crib, bassinet, or both. A bassinet is preferable when they are little.
A carseat and stroller. They come in sets called travel systems if you like. At first, the baby is too small to ride in just the stroller. So the carseat fits into the stroller for baby to ride in.
Several receiving blankets. They work for everything from swaddling baby to a burp rag!
A couple bigger blankets. You never know when there will be a windy or rainy day. You might want to throw one over the carseat when going in and outside.
Bottles..whether you breastfeed or not. When you have to be away, your significant other or a sitter can feed the baby breastmilk out of a bottle.
A breastpump (if you are nursing)
Breastmilk storage bags
Breast pads
Nipple cream
Formula if you are not nursing
A pacifier. If you can get your baby to take one, it is helpful to have baby sleep with one at night because it promotes breathing through the nose, which can reduce the risk of sids.

Things you may want in the near future after baby is born:
Play gyms that promote tummy time and other motor skills
Bouncy seat
High Chair (kind of a necessity when they start solid foods)
Swing (my babies spent a lot of time in theirs...makes it easier to get things done around the house)
A baby sling (that way you could just carry the baby with you to do housework)
Bigger Clothes

Hope this helps! Congrats!

Go to www.babycenter.com or search for free parenting magazines. There are a few that are completly free thanks to advertisers. When you first enroll they will send you a "wish list" which is pretty extensive.

What you buy will depend on your budget. You will need for sure diapers, a car seat, formula (even if you plan to breast feed as it may take time for you to produce enough milk for the baby), bottles, clothes, and blankets. Don't get too many newborn outfits as most babies go through that size pretty quickly.

Good Luck and Congratulations!

This is a great question because when you register they want to you to get everything in the store!
My daughter is 6 months old so I can tell you the things we used on a regular basis.
Boppy pillow. Even if you dont breastfeed they are an excellent way to keep your child in your lap for everything. You can breastfeed or bottle feed in a position that is comfortable for both of you.
Bottles.
Bottle brush
Nipples
Small pacifiers
Plenty of Onesies. They are the easiest thing to put on a baby especially when they are new.
I also suggest a sleep sack. Halo makes a great one and you can also some great ones at Target and Babies R Us.
Diapers and Wipes
A great pair of baby fingernail clippers. Their nails grow so fast.
Aveno makes a great baby wash.
Sleep positioner.
Monitor of some sort. I am partial to the video monitor though.
Tons of receiving blankets.
A swaddler. You can buy fleece ones at just about any store that have velcro on them so that the baby feels secure and you dont have to worry about trying to tie the puzzle. (it wasnt as easy for me as it looked)
Sling
Great baby seat
Socks and hats
Lastly I highly suggest a book by the Sleeplady. I am putting a link so that you can check it out. We had a friend who loaned it to us and our baby has been sleeping through the night since she was 3 months old.

Good luck! Having a baby is a great and fun thing!!

Are you having a baby shower? If so register at Babies R Us for big ticket items, like a travel crib, car seat/stroller combo (Those are the two things I got the most use out of), sleepers, onsies, those little sleeper gowns with the elastic on the bottom...makes it easier to change baby's diaper in the middle of the night, burp clothes (Cloth diapers), pacifiers (My son never liked them), soft blankets. Go to www.babycenter.com for a more complete list. They also have a list of what to take to the hospital with you. Don't forget to take a calling card with you, as cell phone use is restricted to certain areas in the hospital due to them interfering with heart monitors.

diapers, wipes, bottles and formula (unless you plan on breastfeeding), onesies, some baby wash, something to clean the umbilical cord with ( I forget what I used, though), a car seat and stroller, blankets, and maybe a place to sleep. When my daughter was a newborn, the only place she would sleep was her bouncy seat. She just loved it. She slept in that for the first 3 months.

newborn diapers - i liked pampers swaddlers
diaper cream, body washes, bathtub
lots and lots of onesies
receiving blankets
tons of burp cloths
baby laundry detergent
a bouncy chair is nice (boppy makes a great papason type one)
and of course bottles if you are bottle feeding
and a boppy is nice nice to have for yourself too
place for baby to sleep, either crib or bassinett

i think that's all that i used for the first few months. your baby wont be into playing or anything for a few months, so just stick with the neccessities for now. ENJOY and Congrats!
