The animal doesn't live on the bed of a river, it spends part of its time in the river but it feeds on shore. The name is perfecly apt "hippo-" is from the Greek word for "horse" (we see it in words like hippodrome, for instance)while "potamus" is from the Greek for "river" (again we see it in words like "mesopotamia"). Put them together into "hippopotamus" and you get "river horse".
