I'm debating between a Toshiba or Gateway laptop. They have the following technologies:
Gateway = Intel Centrino core duo,
Toshiba = AMD turion 64 X 2 Dual core mobile technology.
Is Intel or AMD the better choice?
Here are the model numbers I am trying to decide over: A215-S4747 and MT6840. (Best Buy Flyer)
I understand the Toshiba's come with a restore disk where as the others do not. If a Gateway is purchased can a restore disk by made at home by the user? Which one would you chose and a short reason why would be appreciated. My use would be internet, email, browsing and some video work changing VHS home movies to DVD. I'll also put more RAM in it if necessary.

If you're seriously looking for a laptop, I recommend Toshiba! I have two of their Qosmio line (both F30/695lsbl's), and they practically look after themselves.
I had mine crash on me once last year, but it was due to my own experimentation with software. I now run CCleaner, RegCure and PCPal as precautionary measures against malware, as well as Norton, Comodo and Windows Defender.

The Toshiba Qosmio comes with Intel Centrino Core Duo T2300 as standard, 160GB HDD, 516MB RAM (have both of mine upgraded to 2GB) and whole host of other mouth watering goodies!

Gateways suck royally! They are only good for offices, and even then!

I bought a Toshiba Satellite A215-S4747 6 weeks ago at Best Buy and I really like it . It would be great for your needs if you wanted one. I am a big fan of Toshiba products. Two TV's, DVD player and computer are all Toshiba.
Best Buy installed Norton AntiVirus and SpySweeper for an extra $130
