FTP server or FTP client?

FTP server answers FTP requests
FTP client makes FTP requests to FTP servers

For starting an FTP client session, if you don't have specific FTP software, open a console window and type in the FTP command as ftp hostname and then log in.

For FTP server, you need to enable FTP connections and service on your machine. There are many other items to do here as well. Do an internet search for FTP Server Setup for plenty of good info.

There are lots of FTP handlers (programs you can use for it, that is) out there. I have several. Among them, ws_ftp, FileZilla, the Firefox add-on called FireFTP, and a tool in WeBuilder. (Of all of them, my current favorite is FireFTP, but just because I'm lazy and it's always there...)

The other thing you need is, the FTP address and userid and password for the server at the host end. The hosting folks will have to give you that. They may have also given you information like a startup folder, and any other SPECIAL setup information they want you to follow.

Then, you open up your very own favorite FTP program like one of the above...and set up an "account" with all the setup information, and name the account, so's you'll never have to enter the setup information again. Then you click Connect. Then you can highlight files on one side (like in a folder on your computer) and click, usually an arrow, between the two computers, and copies of the files will go to the other computer, and you'll get an updated list. You can also delete files on either side. Then when your done, Disconnect.

That's heem.
